Junior National Championships
These are some of the INITIAL positions on the characteristics of the Junior National Championships, with the primary concern to be all inclusive. For example, if some do not wish 50s in the strokes then they do not have to put their swimmers in them. Some coaches want them, so we accommodate them with 50s. The coaches that don't like the 50s in the strokes, don't let your swimmers do them!
1.
For all USA citizens, 18 and under swimmers who can meet the minimum time standards, regardless of swimming affiliation.
2.
Must be US citizens.
3.
If possible, one week after the Senior National Championships. This will minimize any negative impact on Senior Nationals for the few, very top, young swimmers and their coaches.
4.
Have all the events, including 50's in each of the strokes. We need to join the rest of the world on this issue.
5.
Short Course during the March/April meet. Long Course during the August meet. There could be a case for a long course meet in the Spring. If USA Swimming would do away with the short course standards for qualifying for Senior Nationals (!!!!! which is extremely unfair to the young developing club swimmers of this country !!!!!!), then a good case could be made to go to long course for the Junior Nationals in the Spring! Another potential reason to go to a Long Course Junior National during the spring would be, if USA Swimming, Inc. would fund an international team trip, with the selection meet being the Spring Junior. What kind of motivation would that give club coaches to work with our young developing athletes over the fall and winter months??!!! It would be tremendous!
6.
The Junior Nationals needs to be held at popular travel sites; such as Orlando, FL in the spring. More northern sites, such as the beautiful Seattle area, should be used in the summers. The site should contribute to the motivational set to train hard during the school year and get to go to a great meet and fun site in the spring.
7.
Junior National needs to be scored. Many coaches do not like this idea; but many do wish or even need it to be scored. Those of us who do not want it to be score, need to be strong enough in our own programs not to emphasis this; but at the same time respect the position that it needs to be done for many programs. (Individualism vs. Team Concept)
8.
Junior Nationals needs to be an approved or sanctioned meet, if possible. If it is sanctioned by USA Swimming , Inc, then all swimmers will have to be registered with USA Swimming. If they will not sanction it, then we will seek approval status; which of course, has great precedence with YMCA, high school and college swimming. If approval is denied, then we would seek a legal remedy for the sake of the times. If we fail at a legal solution, then we go it on our own!!!
9.
We will seek major sponsorships from corporate America. We deserve it and we will get it!!!
Such a Junior National Championship will have such a positive impact upon club swimming in this country. It will help put us on a higher level of developing top athletes for later representation of the United State at the highest International levels. What a positive boost for our club programs!!
